“A Lovely Fall Day…” by Richard F. Yates

It seemed like such a lovely, fall day. The sun was shining…it wasn’t too hot—but then that strange object, with the flashing blue lights, whizzed by in the sky…

And suddenly, everything around me seemed to awaken… Trees, hedges, even the lamp posts… They grew eyes, which opened and scanned the world with such fury, such hatred, that it was truly terrifying to behold!

Luckily, none of those things had legs, and were, in fact, rooted to the ground, so although they gnashed their ferocious teeth and rolled their terrible eyes at me, as I drove slowly past them in the drive-thru lane, and although I did roll my windows up, I was still able to get my chicken nuggets and soda without too much trouble, and made it home before my fries were even cold! (Lucky!)
