“Art in the Yard!” by Richard F. Yates

Yesterday (21 July 2018) we had another Primitive Art Party in the yard. It was a nice day, not too hot, and we had a lot of fun!

Basically, we just drug a few tables out into the yard, put a bunch of old art along the sidewalk and propped the bigger stuff up against the side of the house, then Frankie started making pop-cap art (for necklaces and magnets and stuff,) and Mariah was painting on cardboard. I grabbed some more recycled cardboard, pens, and oil pastels, and sat on a blanket (in the shade, of course) and drew a bunch of monsters. (You’ll be seeing them over the next few days.)

We met several of the neighbors, including a young kid who came by early (and didn’t want to leave—we eventually gave him some cardboard and pens and he drew a picture.) We even discovered that a couple of the neighbors, just two houses down, like the same kind of music that we do!!! (This was WEIRD because we like freaky stuff, like The Legendary Pink Dots and Alien Sex Fiend and Current 93, and there aren’t many people in our small town who have even heard of these bands!) We had some fun talking to folks, making some art, and chilling. Even Gage Jones, who usually stops by and purchases a few things, got into the action and painted a picture himself!

Mariah barbecued some chicken, Elise hosted a video-game party inside, and the neighbors were all cool… Quite a success. And we even sold some stuff! Frankie sold some buttons and pop-cap pieces, Mariah sold a collage, I sold a painting, and Ellie sold one of her spray-can pieces! We didn’t make much cash, but we all got that rush of “Someone wants something I made!” That’s always cool…

I recommend that you drag your art supplies out into the front yard (or sidewalk or courtyard, whatever you’ve got) one of these days and just spend some time making some stuff in public. If nothing else, you might spark a conversation or even inspire someone else to make something! Get that community spirit up and moving! (Hauntings are always more fun when they’re active!)

For those who might be interested, I posted a few videos from the event, recorded “Live” and on location, at my FACEBOOT page. Check them out by following the link:
