“Saturday Fun (With Richard and Mariah)” by Richard F. Yates

Yesterday, we had a lil’ DJ gig in Chehalis, WA, USA, playing tunes for a daughter of one of Mariah’s friends-from-work. The venue was about 45 minutes from where we live, and Mariah and I figured we’d get there early and get everything set up just to make sure…AAAAND…I forgot the laptop—with all the music on it.

We unloaded speakers and got those set up, then jumped back in the car and had a nice drive. (There is a chance we exceeded the speed limit, just a bit, at this point…) Made it back to the house, grabbed the computer, and then back on the road! Believe it or not, we weren’t even late for the ceremony!

After the “I-Do’s,” (in weather that LOOKED like it was going to rain, but never did,) we moved the operation to a big, red barn (which was actually very nice) for food and dancing.

These kids today… All they want to hear is newer hip-hop, of which I have very little. (I’m more of a new wave / techno / old school guy.) Any song that they put on a list, I brought, but what the BRIDE requested and what the CROWD wants doesn’t always match. When someone asks for Queen or Journey or Michael Jackson, I’ve got that, no problem, but the NEW stuff… (I’ve been trying to retire from DJing for about four years, but THEY KEEP PULLING ME BACK IN!)

Anyway, it ended up being a fun, often humorous event! (How many times have you seen a BRIDE in her wedding dress do “the worm” to a Billy Idol song???) Sure, I had to repeat a couple of hip hop tunes (because that’s the music they wanted to hear, and I didn’t have very many cuts—MOST of what was on the request list was country music), but I think everyone had a good time, and for me, that’s good enough!
