“Sock Hop @ The Longview Public Library, Longview, WA, USA” by Richard F. Yates

Yesterday was the Sock Hop at the Longview Public Library, here in Longview, WA, USA!

There weren’t THAT many kids that showed up (although, to be fair, I’ve had much smaller audiences for DJ gigs), but the kids who did come had a good time, and most of them arrived just as we were starting and stayed for the entire event! At different points in the dance (which only lasted an hour and a half) we had kids limbo-ing, doing the “hand jive” (along to Sha Na Na), and even wandering the room in a CONGA LINE! Kids know how to PARTY!

It was a great time, and several kids came up when it was over and very politely thanked me for playing music. That was pretty cool.

The whole event was part of the LPL’s Summer Reading program, which is designed to help keep kids coming to the library and encouraging them to read. When the little tykes sign up for the program, they get a FREE book, right there on the spot. They also get a goal sheet, and each day that they come back and show that they’ve read something, they get a prize! (I know, I know, you shouldn’t have to BRIBE kids to get them to do something good, but as any Behaviorist can tell you, POSITIVE REENFORCEMENT works.) I took my kids to the Summer Reading program every year—and it worked really well…for one of them. She became a life-long book lover and reading fanatic. The other preferred sports… (There’s always a REBEL in the family.)

I love doing these volunteer gigs (they tried to pay me, but I told them to put the cash back into the library) because I really believe that libraries and reading are KEYS to helping fight ignorance and preparing kids for a better life. I try to help in one of the few ways that I’m able to!

That’s about it for this gig…except for this! I’m also including a list of what I played for the one or two of you who might be curious!!! TECHNICALLY, I didn’t stick with 1950’s “sock hop” tunes, often drifting into other decades, and honestly, not a single KID in that room knew a 1950’s song from a 1990’s cut. It was all OLD music to them. (One little girl came up to the DJ booth and asked, “Is this Elvis music?” And I said, “Some of it is!”) I just tried to play fun, up-beat tunes, and from the amount of jumping around I saw, the kids were happy enough. (And, secretly, so was I!!!)
