“Update on the Sidewalk Garden” by Richard F. Yates

A few days ago I spotted a little sidewalk garden along 12th Ave. in Longview, WA, USA, and I stopped to get a photo and write a post about how cool I thought it was for someone to make this little bit of NICENESS on a city street. Yesterday morning, however, as I was driving along 12th, I noticed that some horrible person had taken the time to VANDALIZE the little sidewalk garden, either out of spite or evilness or stupidity (or some combination of these motivating factors.)

WHY? Someone takes the time and effort to build and cultivate a little bit of beauty—that wasn’t hurting anyone or costing anything—and someone ELSE finds it necessary to MANGLE AND DEFACE an artist’s work. I don’t understand the motivation to destroy a flower garden. It takes so little effort to DESTROY something that took time and energy and commitment to create…

I just don’t understand it…
