Greetings citizens, it’s Friday!!!! We’ve noticed that the Workshop has picked up quite a few new followers lately, so a little re-intro and a what’s up seemed appropriate! For you NEW FOLKS, welcome to the weirdness! We draw and write and sing and read and confuse and confront and ENJOY LIFE here at the Workshop. Thanks for coming along for the ride!
The last few weeks have been a bit of a chore to get through. The human host that I inhabit keeps having “life experiences,” which get in the way of the CREATIVE WORK that I (as a non-corporeal entity) can’t do without—well—hands of my own. But, when he least suspects it, I’ve still managed to take control and make him draw a bunch of stuff (all coded imagery—except for that one cat picture, which was mostly visual) and write a bunch of words in his paper notebooks. What better way is there to ESCAPE the horrors of “real life” than by being creative and making something where there was NOTHING before you started? (There are NO better ways.)
We’ve written several books reviews in the last couple of weeks, (been reading a lot of digital comics lately, but not exclusively those), and updated the “Read a Damn Book” page to include all the books reviewed, so far, as well as a new, little mini-intro. We’ve also written (for the first time since 2014!!!) an update for the “About” page! And we’re working on adding a LINKS page to the Workshop, to help collect all the EXTRA BITS floating around on the web into a handy, clickable menu! (So many abandoned blogs, so many weird photos and drawings…)
For those wondering, the release of Randy Long’s BIGFOOT book is fast approaching. The paperback and digital book will collect the entire “Bigfoot” storyline in one handy, easy to manipulate text, and will also include a bunch of Randy’s classic squirrel stories all right in a row, so you can see how THAT struggle for survival plays out! AND, in addition, the ALLEN TOMBES – FIRE FROM WATER text is moving right along. (HUGE thanks to Shane Grove for reading a draft of the manuscript and finding some pesky typos and other errors!!!) We’re hoping to have BIGFOOT done within a week or so. The ALLEN TOMBES might still be a few weeks away—because we’ve got some BUSY WEEKS coming up! Lots of stuff to prepare for! (I know—never end a sentence with a preposition… But we’re rebels here at the Workshop!)
The next SEVERAL weekends (particularly in February) are filled to the gills with thrills!
—January 27th is the coming home party for our good friend (and frequent contributor to the P.E.W.), Scott Sparks!
—February 3rd is Michael King’s art show opening at the Koth Gallery, in the lower floor of the Longview Public Library in Longview, WA, USA! He’ll be showcasing his screen printing talents as well as his more humorous, satirical side, with a display of his monster movie promo poster Christmas cards—and other POP-A-GANDA strangeness! (AND he’s asked me to DJ at the opening! I’ll try and get some photos to share on the P.E.W. of the event!)
—February 10th and 11th is the I LIKE COMIC CON in Vancouver, WA, USA! My older daughter, Frankie, bought me tickets for X-mas, and I’m looking forward to seeing Shannon Wheeler (of Too Much Coffee Man fame) as well as Howard Chaykin, James O’Barr (whose book, The Crow, I reviewed a few months ago), Dan Brereton, Neal Adams…and a whole bunch more folks! Should be a lot of fun! (I’m not vending or anything, just going to enjoy the show!)
—February 17th is LONGCON at the Longview Public Library in Longview, WA, USA, and Randy Long and I will be in charge of a Primitive Entertainment Workshop table!!!! We’ll be signing books, chatting with folks about DO-IT-YOURSELF creation techniques, selling some art, and trying to get people excited about making their own stuff! Michael King will also be there selling Bonemill and H.E.X. and Art Horse materials, and I believe Art Horse staff writer, Dan Foster, will be delivering a talk on FANDOM at one of the panels! Mariah and I went to Dan’s talk last year on “Fan Fiction,” and that was great, so if you’re in the Pacific Northwest that weekend, make sure and stop by!!!!
Yeah, it’s been a trying couple of weeks, but we’re making our way through—living one day at a time (and occasionally eating a brownie or two to keep morale up! You can imagine what we’re munching are “special” brownies, if you like, but really, we just like the chocolate for the emotional support!) Keep your eyes to the skies and your pen on the paper!!! CHEERS!
